Legal Search Room

The Legal Search Room is in General Register House, the main building of the National Archives of Scotland (NAS).

The conditions for using the search room are slightly different to those of the Historical Search Room. You should only use the Legal Search Room if your research is for a legal or commercial purpose.

The Legal Search Rooms have the same opening hours and holidays as the Historical Search Room.

Records available

The following records are available for consultation in the Legal Search Room:
  • Register of Deeds
  • Register of Sasines
  • Register of Tailzies
  • Diligence records
  • Chancery records
  • Adoption records

Fees

A charge of 6 GBP is made for each record that you consult in the Legal Search Room with the exception of the adoption records.

Adoption records

A guide to the adoption records is available. We advise you to read it carefully before visiting us. Adoption records are closed to general public access for 100 years and can only be consulted by appointment with the Adoptions Officer.
