Supreme courts | The
supreme courts in Scotland are divided into the Court of Session (civil) and the
High Court of Justiciary (criminal). The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) accepts
records from both of these institutions according to agreed schedules.
Court of SessionThe NAS accepts annual transmissions of Court of Session
processes after they are 5 years old. For a complete listing of record types,
read the provisional Court
of Session schedule - Acrobat PDF 102KB, new window. We receive Court of Session
transmission in April, which is the start of each financial year. Court staff
must prepare the material in accordance with the agreed schedule, ensuring that
processes are boxed, using boxes which meet the NAS
box specification or else have been approved by NAS Conservation Services
Branch. The boxes should be labelled, easily accessible and ready for uplift by
NAS staff. Appropriate finding aids, preferably in an electronic form, must accompany
each transmission. For records and indexes which are born digital or exclusively
held in an electronic form read the NAS guidance on electronic records.
High Court of JusticiaryThe NAS accepts annual transmissions of High
Court records after they are 10 years old. We receive High Court transmissions
in April, which is the start of each financial year. Court staff must prepare
the material in accordance with the agreed schedule, ensuring that processes are
properly
boxed, preferably to archive standards, labelled, easily accessible and ready
for uplift by NAS staff. Appropriate finding aids, preferably in an electronic
form, must accompany each transmission. Prior to the transmission of
any records to the NAS, the High Court of Justiciary record keeper should complete
the relevant online
transmission form - Acrobat PDF 23KB, new window describing the quantities,
format and appropriate metreage or shelf space of the records being transmitted.
