Learning

Welcome to the Learning section of the National Records of Scotland (NRS) website, which promotes the use of archives to support and inspire teachers and learners of all ages to understand the content and context of historical records.

Teachers and pupils
Scottish Archives for Schools (SAfS) is our education website designed to support the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and National Qualifications. Visit SAfS for details of our online resources, workshops and web conferencing programme for primary and secondary schools.

Thistle and Rose Exhibition

Scottish Archive Network education modules
NRS is a partner in the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) which links over 50 participating archives across the country. SCAN's website contains an education micro-site with four modules designed to support learning and teaching of History in Scottish schools. Visit the SCAN website for units on Using Sources, Coal Mining in Scotland, Public Health and Housing, and Women's Suffrage in Scotland, which feature a variety of historical records from SCAN's participating archives.

Publications
NRS has been making the archives of Scotland available through its publications since the early 19th century. So whether you are studying history or reading it purely for your own pleasure, our range of Publications can help bring the past alive.

Talks and visits

Would you like to visit National Records of Scotland or hear a talk by a member of staff? Find out how to organise or participate in Talks and visits.

Palaeography

As part of its commitment to lifelong learning, NRS helps researchers who encounter difficulties reading manuscript sources of information written before the era of modern handwriting and standard English. Read more about how the NRS can help you obtain knowledge of Palaeography.
