This part of the website tells you how to search within the National
Archives of Scotland (NAS) website and how to search separate catalogues
and indexes in the NAS. The site search device will only search text
in this website's html pages. This will be useful when searching for
information about issues such as Freedom of Information, preservation,
copyright etc. It will be of limited use if you wish to carry out
historical or genealogical research - for this you should visit our
Doing
research section. NAS online catalogue and
other indexes and catalogues
Each collection of records held by the National Archives of Scotland
(NAS) has a catalogue or index to help you find the right material
whether it's a file or a single document. A catalogue lists archives
according to where it came from and when it was created (its provenance)
and can list individual documents or files. An index is arranged according
to name or topic or type of document and will lead you to a specific
document. Some series of records are catalogued or indexed separately.
To carry out research using catalogues and indexes to records in the
NAS and elsewhere go to the online
catalogue pages.
