Private papers

The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) holds over 500 large collections of papers (NAS ref. GD2-GD525) and over 1400 smaller collections (NAS ref. GD1/1-GD1/1410). These range in size from the massive Seafield Collection (NAS ref. GD248) containing almost 10,000 volumes, boxes and bundles, down to the smallest GD1s, containing single letters or charters.

The collections include the family and estate papers of landowners from all over Scotland, records of businesses, societies and institutions. They contain documents from every part of the world to which Scots have gone as travellers, traders, settlers, soldiers or administrators and relate to every aspect of the political, social, economic, cultural and intellectual history of Scotland since the 12th century.

The records have been gifted to the nation, deposited in the NAS on long-term loan (hence the series name 'Gifts and Deposits') or purchased by the NAS.

Family papers

The second half of the 20th century saw a great increase in the number of collections of private papers taken in to the national archives. The sale of many long established family estates, the realisation of the need to preserve papers in proper conditions and a desire to make them available for historical research, has encouraged many owners of collections to deposit them with us. At the same time, the amalgamation of law firms has stimulated the deposit of their collections of papers. The NAS has also purchased a number of collections and individual items.

As well as the publications 'List of Gifts and Deposits in the Scottish Record Office', 'Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry' and 'Tracing Scottish Local History', the NAS has also published a 'List of American Documents' that provides references to American material in private and public records.

Other published sources giving references to our holdings of private papers are listed below. As they were published before our name change to the National Archives of Scotland, our records will be listed under 'The Scottish Record Office'.

Business papers

An overview of business records in the National Archives, with a useful, if out of date, summary of business records tucked away in family collections, is given in J Imrie, 'National archive sources for business history' in 'Studies in Scottish business history', edited by P L Payne (London, 1967). Records of businesses are also described in chapter 14 of 'Tracing Scottish Local History'. A source list of business records in private collections is available in our search rooms.

Also useful is the 'Dictionary of Scottish business biography, 1860 - 1960', edited by Anthony Slaven and Sydney Checkland in 2 volumes covering the staple industries and the processing, distribution and service industries (Aberdeen, 1986 and 1990). See also the Historic Manuscripts Commissions' 'Records of British business and industry 1760 - 1914: textiles and leather' (Guides to Sources for British History 8: London, 1990).

The following list gives selected collection titles and covering dates. You should consult them at our search room in General Register House. However, as many are out-housed and will need to be brought in to the search room, you should contact us in advance of your visit to avoid delays.
