News: Launch of 1915 Valuation Rolls

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) is pleased to announce the launch of valuation rolls on the ScotlandsPeople website. A detailed picture of wartime Scotland is revealed with the release of details from the valuation rolls for the year 1915-1916.

The project to digitise and index valuation rolls was initiated in 2007 and from today, the rolls have been made searchable online for the first time, allowing genealogists, local historians and other researchers to view images of entries in the rolls, fully searchable by name and address. Valuation rolls list properties across Scotland, their proprietors, tenants and occupiers and their valuation. They were created annually, according to the financial year, from April 1855 and are grouped according to burgh or county. They are often used by family historians particularly those trying to trace individuals between the decennial censuses. For this reason, the NRS have decided to create digital images of all the valuation rolls from the financial year 1855-56 to 1915-16, and to index the years in that period which are halfway between censuses: 1855-56, 1865-66, 1875-76, 1885-1886, 1895-1896, 1905-06 and 1915-1916, and every fifth year up until 1955-56. Further indexed years will be added to the ScotlandsPeople website in due course.
