News: NRS Adoption Unit - important information

As part of the amalgamation of the General Register Office for Scotland and the National Archives of Scotland the adoption services of both areas will merge with effect from 31 October 2011.

From that date all adoption matters will be dealt with by one office. This will improve our client services which presently include:

  • Registering current Scottish Adoptions, Scottish Parental Orders and certain Foreign Adoptions.
  • Producing current Scottish adoption certificates for newly adopted children.
  • Linkage of adopted people with their original birth details by post and in person. This may also include showing the original birth entry in the Scottish birth register.
  • Accessing Scottish Adoption court process papers.

A new appointment based interview service will also be introduced to enable adopted people to plan a visit to the Adoption Unit as well as a continuing commitment to offer a service to anyone who comes into the office unannounced.
