| The National Archives
of Scotland (NAS) acts as the official archive of the Scottish
Parliament and is very pleased and proud to continue the tradition
of presenting the Scottish Parliament with a fine bound visitors'
book to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Parliament.
The visitors' book was bound by James Thorburn (pictured),
one of the team of eleven experienced professional conservators
who work to preserve the historic collections of the NAS.

The book has been hand sewn and bound in the manner
of previous visitors' books, in colour palette and contemporary
style, using grey with purple morocco goatskin for covering material
and a bold contemporary design feature of large blind tooled Roman
letter X, to signify ten years, embossed in blind on the front cover;
Scots Law being based on Roman law.
The internal decoration takes its inspiration from the colours
and motif of the thistle, as interpreted by Alistair McAuley and
Paul Simmons of the successful Glasgow based textile design company,
Timorous Beasties, who supplied the textile to enhance display of
the book but also feature the Roman letter X. The main pages were
decorated by Yvonne Holton, Herald Painter at the Court of the Lord
Lyon, to receive the signatures of Her Majesty the Queen, HRH Prince
Phillip and the Alex Fergusson MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish
Parliament.

As well as looking after the records of the present Scottish Parliament,
the NAS preserves the records of the Scottish Parliament which existed
until 1707 (when the Parliaments of Edinburgh and Westminster united
under the Treaty of Union). Read our guide
to records of Scottish Parliament.
