| The National Archives of Scotland and The General Register
Office for Scotland have been working with Edinburgh Primary
Schools on the Eco Schools initiative as part of their policy
to improve the environment, save energy and recycle. To get
the message over to staff the departments asked local pupils
to design posters.

A competition, open to all primary schools in Edinburgh, got a
tremendous response from across the city. The winning designs will
be used in all our buildings to encourage staff to:
- save energy
- save water
- walk to work
- recycle.
The judging panel, chaired by the Deputy Registrar General, found
it very difficult to select the winners, as all the poster designs
were to a very high standard. The judges were also impressed with
the knowledge all the children displayed in their posters -
all of which stressed the importance of saving the environment.
George MacKenzie, Keeper of the Records of Scotland, on behalf
of The National Archives of Scotland, and Paul Parr, Deputy Registrar
General, on behalf of The General Register Office for Scotland,
will present the prizes to the children and the winning schools
on Friday the 12th of June at 10:00am in General Register House,
Edinburgh.
George MacKenzie said:-
"The Edinburgh Eco Primary Schools initiative has given us
imaginative, informative and colourful posters. These will get a
very important message over to all our staff in a simple but effective
way. We are grateful to all the children and their teachers who
took part in the competition and are only sorry we were unable to
give all of them a prize. We are delighted to have worked with the
Edinburgh Eco Schools initiative."
