News: Photographs required for reader's ticket from 5 January 2009

In common with many archives, the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) is looking to do what it can to increase the security of its holdings, and the conditions under which it issues tickets to readers. We currently ask for two forms of identification (one with a photograph and one showing the reader's current address). More information about the issuing of reader's tickets is available on our Search Rooms page at http://www.nas.gov.uk/searchRooms/preparing.asp.

From 5 January 2009 we will also require readers to bring with them two colour passport-style photographs. One will be added to the reader's ticket, as a means of identifying him or her on entering the building, and to ensure that tickets are not transferred between readers. The other will be retained on file by NAS along with a note of the contact details supplied when the reader's ticket was obtained.

We would advise readers to obtain such photographs in advance of a visit to prevent delays in issuing a new reader's ticket. For those visiting General Register House, it might be useful to know that a photo booth is available in the St James Centre, Waverley Station and the Bus Station.

We hope that readers will not find this additional condition too onerous, and that they will recognise the need for secure identification in providing access to the irreplaceable records which we hold.

Thank you for your co-operation and assistance with this change to our security measures.
