NAS is an agency of the Scottish Government based in Edinburgh and plays an important role in Scotland's economic and cultural life. The property market is dependent on the legal services provided by NAS, while its historical services, in addition to serving education, are a major attraction for genealogists and help promote tourism. Each year NAS gives its customers access to nearly 200,000 records, answers over 4,000 postal and e-mail enquiries, and has over 1 million visits to its websites. NAS employs approximately 160 staff.

Non Executive Directors are initially appointed for three years with an option to remain in post for an additional two years by mutual agreement. The Board normally meets in Edinburgh four times a year.
