News: 'If I can't vote, I don't count'

On 15 December 2006, the Scottish Parliament will officially open a special exhibition on the women's suffragette movement in Scotland, 'If I can't vote, I don't count', which will remain open to the public in the Main Hall of the Parliament until March 2007. The exhibition includes archive documents sourced from the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and items from other Scottish cultural institutions. As part of the commemoration, The Scottish Government commissioned a sculpture by the artist Shauna McMullan, entitled 'Travelling the Distance', which is to be situated in the Parliament and serve as a permanent reminder of Scottish women's contribution to advancing democracy and improving the lives of women in Scotland.

As part of the detailed preparation for this exhibition, staff at the NAS carried out essential conservation and cataloguing work on documents held in government files relating to the Suffragettes. These mainly pertained to their periods of imprisonment. This is in anticipation of increased public interest in these records and their possible increased usage. In due course, the enhanced catalogue details will be visible on the NAS online public catalogue.

As a further preservation safeguard, the files containing those documents which were loaned for the exhibition have been digitally imaged. These can now be viewed in NAS search rooms, enabling researchers to see the records while they are still on exhibition at the Parliament.
