On 28 November 2006, the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) launched its latest education resource on our education website, Scottish Archives for Schools (SAfS): www.scottisharchivesforschools.org
'Leaving it all behind: the impact of war on servicemen, their families and society' addresses the ethics of war, drawing on the wills and correspondence of servicemen from WW1 and WW2. Designed for use in upper secondary schools, the resource supports the teaching of Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS), Philosophy and Citizenship.
The documents in the resource have been selected from a collection of over 30,000 wills of Scottish servicemen that are preserved in the NAS. Each one tells an individual story, but together they add to our knowledge and understanding of those who sacrificed their lives during these wars. They show how ordinary Scots faced the prospect of dying for their country, and made provision for their family and friends.
By studying these documents, students have the opportunity to consider the impact of war on people's beliefs - religious and non-religious, to question the morality of war, and to form their own opinions as to whether war can be justified.
