News: NAS launches new education website

On 26 October 2006, the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) launched its new education website Scottish Archives for Schools (SAfS): www.scottisharchivesforschools.org.

Designed for use in primary and secondary schools, the SAfS website contains on-line resources, details of SAfS publications and the educational workshop programme for 2007. In addition to resources on the Wars of Independence and the Union of the Crowns, the latest resource, 'Leaving it all behind: the impact of war on servicemen, their families and society', will be made available in November 2006. It addresses the ethics of war, drawing on the wills and correspondence of servicemen from WW1 and WW2.

The Keeper of the Records of Scotland, George MacKenzie said, "Archives are like hidden treasure. They often lack the visual appeal of a painting or a museum object but they have something unique. They are the genuine voice of the past, speaking to us down the years. They bring us closer to real people from history than anything else. That's why I am delighted that the National Archives of Scotland is launching its new website for schools, which will let students and teachers use this incredibly rich resource to help them understand how our history has formed our present."
