On 17 October 2006, the 6 millionth image was captured by the National Archives of Scotland's (NAS) digitising teams. It was a page from a communion roll, 1884-1894, of Glasgow Langside Free Church, one of the records deposited in Glasgow City Archives under charge and superintendence of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland (NAS reference: CH3/534/32 pp82-3). The image can be seen in full below. These records are being digitised as part of the programme to capture all the deposited records of the Church of Scotland up to 1901. More information on this programme can be found on our Scottish Documents website.
The NAS digitising teams have been capturing images from original documents in colour, greyscale and bitonal formats continuously since January 2001. All these images are freely available to view in the NAS search rooms as Virtual Volumes. In addition to the wills and testaments, church records and sasines registers they include a wide range of other records, including photographs.
The availability of these images enables greater public access, while preserving the original documents.
Congratulations to all the digitising teams. Here's to the next 6 million images!
