Presiding Officer visits the NAS | On
10 May 2006, the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) hosted a visit from George
Reid, the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament and his wife Daphne, formerly
archivist with the International Red Cross. Mr and Mrs Reid are very interested
in the holdings of the NAS and have, on a previous occasion, visited General Register
House. This visit took them to Thomas Thomson House, where they were shown our
Conservation Services Branch and the digitisation unit staffed by volunteers from
the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU).
In Conservation they saw a variety
of work on a range of objects, including 19th century photographs of prisoners
at Barlinnie, some of the recently digitised soldiers'
wills, and church records being repaired prior to digitisation. | | They
were particularly interested in seeing the work Conservation do sealing the Letters
Patent. These are stitched with pink ribbon in George Reid's office, then passed
to the Queen for signature. After this, they are then brought to the NAS to have
the Great Seal attached.
George Reid's family is from Muckhart, and he
was delighted to hear that the GSU volunteers have recently digitised the kirk
session records for the parish, which he hopes to come back and use soon. Before
leaving to open the Parliament, Mr Reid had a chance to see more goodies from
the archives, including the recently discovered ballot bag and slips from the
Lochbroom Militia, c.1826 (NAS ref. GD305/2/558) and James Craig's plan of the
area round Register House in 1773 (NAS ref. RHP 93977).
