News: Sir William Wallace in the archives

Experts from Scotland, England and France are to take a closer look at a 700 year old William Wallace document in The National Archives (TNA) in London. You can see an image of it here: William Wallace document (TNA ref. SC 1/30/81) - Acrobat PDF, 90.0KB, new window

An academic research group of distinguished historians and archivists from Scotland, England and France will study the document’s provenance, to find out where and why it was created. The notes of the first meeting of the experts' group, which took place on 5 August 2010 at the National Archives, Kew are available here: William Wallace Working Group TNA meeting, 5 August 2010- Acrobat PDF 28.5KB, new window.

The notes of the second and final meeting of the experts' group, which took place on 7 March 2011 at the National Archives of Scotland, are available here: William Wallace Working Group NAS meeting, 7 March 2011- Acrobat PDF 31.2KB, new window.

A press release was issued on 16 March after the March experts' group meeting, and can be seen on the Scottish Government website at: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2011/03/16172138.

Plans to enhance the web feature on this site include a voiced version and 3D virtualised images.

An exhibition on the document is planned in Edinburgh during 2012, to tie in with the culture and creativity focus of the Homecoming legacy. It will feature the latest virtualisation technologies allowing visitors to experience the document.
